Description
The Canon Demi is a half frame camera released in May 1966 and was the top of the line Demi camera from Canon. “Demi” being the French word for “half”.
It uses ordinary cartridge style 35mm film, but takes two 24 x 18mm exposures in the place of a normal 24 x 36mm film frame. This means a 36 exposure roll will actually hold 72 separate half frame photos. This could be quite a saving per exposure for a simple snapshot camera.
You can either use only one image as a single image or use two randomly or intentionally placed images next to each other as one image.
Economics was the reason for the half frame cameras of the sixties.
Color film was very expensive in comparison to B&W films at the time.
The Demi is a beautiful child of the sixties. Its sleek, metal body panels wrap around rounded corners giving the camera a comfortable feel in one’s hands.
From today’s point of view. I can say without a doubt that the canon Demi EE17 is one of the best half frame camera ever made.
It offers full manual control and an automatic mode
(shutter priority) with Shutter Speeds from 1/8 – 1/500s + B
The bright canon 30mm f1.7 lens is very sharp.
