Description
After launching the original Nikon FM in 1977, followed by the FM2 in 1982, Nikon introduced the FM2n in 1983. The FM2n became one of the longest-serving Nikon SLR models, remaining in production until 2001 when it was replaced by the hybrid FM3A. It is widely regarded as one of the most reliable cameras ever built.
The FM2n was available in black or chrome finish and is fully mechanical, requiring only two LR44 batteries to power the built-in light meter. It features a shutter speed range from 1 second to 1/4000 second, plus Bulb, and an ISO range of 12–6400. Focusing screens are interchangeable, offering flexibility for different photographic needs.
The differences between the FM2 and FM2n were relatively minor. Nikon updated the focusing screens to Type II Brightscreen, slightly refined the flash sync speed from 1/200s to 1/250s, and removed the X200 setting. The hot shoe was redesigned with a squared-off center cutout for better compatibility. Additionally, the mirror box included a light trap that flipped up when the mirror flipped down. Around 1989–1990, the honeycomb-patterned shutter was replaced with a more durable aluminium blade-type shutter.
